A common point of conversation is the need to diversify our industry and workforce development. While this is extremely important, the diversification of skills often goes undiscussed. Having several different competencies gives us the flexibility to move around the industry as well as be more well-rounded arborists.

There is such a wide variety of opportunities within the tree care industry, including climbing, diagnostics, sales, consulting, and more. In this interactive workshop, hear from a panel of women in arboriculture who will help you uncover the strengths and weaknesses of attendee skills and identify additional potential opportunities. They will discuss some of the industry organizations focused on improving and elevating tree care through education and standards and you’ll hear firsthand experiences from the panelists.

This will be an interactive and instructional workshop that builds on the experience and skills of the speakers.

Using Diagnostics to Expand Your Skill Set
Alison Herrell made her way into the green industry through several internships and jobs but began her career in urban forestry as a cross-trained groundsperson/tree climber and plant healthcare technician. Eventually, she moved into residential sales and then propelled her way into a role as a technical trainer helping with diagnostics and training, plant healthcare recommendations, and research and development to get predictable results for treating pests and pathogens in the urban landscape.

Alison will present some overall diagnostic techniques, application options, and why understanding chemistry can improve your well-roundedness as an arborist and grow your business.

Leveraging Non-Traditional Skills in Arboriculture
Andrea Starbird shares her experience entering the industry from a non-traditional background and accelerating her career by utilizing transferable skills.

Andrea will present the strengths and skills that can help attendees stand out as consultants and arboricultural providers. She’ll also discuss the importance of mentorship, highlight ways to build your network, and briefly look at operational considerations between production and consulting work.

Building a Career in Arboriculture from the Ground Up

This session will dive into ways to rise from entry-level positions, and how to find your “niche” in the expanding arboriculture field by utilizing your unique skills and experience.

Drue Morris got her start in the green industry, working with biological control agents and greenhouse production management as a student worker. From there, she pivoted to arboriculture and entered the field as a groundsperson for a local tree care company. Over her career, she has worked as a climber, crew lead, safety coordinator, nursery specialist, and municipal arborist giving her diverse industry experience.

Join us for some great views, fun, and networking. Sponsored by Hub Arbor Insurance Group.

Tree company owners and managers don’t necessarily need to become OSHA experts or retain legal counsel to deal with the threat of an OSHA inspection or citation. First and foremost, they need to run a proactive safety program and know what is likely to trigger an inspection. They need to be moderately familiar with the rules that govern their operations and of any OSHA “special emphasis programs” that may come into play. It’s not rocket science, nor is it something that can be ignored.

Bob Rouse, Senior Vice President of Business Support, TCIA
